I am a fan of Disney movies
. (Don’t judge me.) Not the new Pixar
3-D versions, but the classics such as “The Lion King
,” “Beauty and the Beast
,” and “The Little Mermaid
.” I loved the story lines. I loved how they’ll take something as creepy as a mermaid, a 9 foot beast, bugs and even a rat (my wife hates rats, but loves the movies Ratatouille
lol) and fantastically woo you into loving them as you would another human being! That is another level of genius. The cream on top for me in the Disney movies of old however was the soundtrack! The movie scores. Watching those movies taught me at a young age the power music has to move you to an emotional place words alone can’t take you. I still remember watching The Lion King the 1st time and boo-hooing when Mufasa
died! I knew it wasn’t real, but the music in the background got me.
Perhaps out of all the Disney songs however, the most captivating to me was “A Whole New World
” from the movie “Aladdin”. That was no ordinary song. The message within that song taught me how to dream…how to travel imaginatively and see beyond my present limitations. Yea, at 9 years old I wasn’t thinking about it like that, but that song always ministered to me. Here is a portion of the lyrics
“A whole new world
a new fantastic point of view.
No one to tell us no, or where to go, or say you’re only dreaming.
With The Jesus Mind
, you know what I get out of this? The power of possibility thinking. To think beyond your current limitations and see life from a whole new world.
Jesus Mind Principle #12: See possibilities, Not limitations
That carpet ride in the movie represents to me seeing life from an “all things are possible” perspective. It’s the way Jesus taught us to live. “If you can believe, all things are possible.” (Mark 11:23) A new fantastic point of view is the beginning stage of a new season, a new day in your life. When someone can see an alternate reality to where they currently are, new opportunities and new possibilities open up. By seeing things differently, you see ways out and ways in…out of where you don’t want to be and ways into where you want and need to be. The difference between seasons are perspectives. A new perspective and gaining a new way you respond to your situations are the key to shifting seasons. Your perspectives can either limit you or liberate you.
Let’s take for example a situation of living from paycheck to paycheck. You’ve lived this way for 3 years now. Money comes, and money goes. You are tired of this and want to shift your season. Let me show you how a shift in statements can begin shifting your season. Most people would say;
“I wish had more money each week.”
Well this statement does three things:
1.) reminds you of lack
2.) closes off your mind from seeing possibilities
3.) takes power out of your hand
What if you changed that statement to a question:
“How can I have more money each week?
This statement does three things
1.) makes you less aware of lack
2.) opens up your mind to search for new possibilities
3.) puts power back into your hand
Do you see that? When you ask how, you can begin to see how…solutions arise to save more, opportunities to invest, share, buy assets etc. You have the power to now change your situation all because of a new view.
Many people have a hard time losing weight by saying “I wish I can lose more weight.” That statement does nothing for you. How about saying “How can I lose more weight?” You can even feel the difference after making those 2 different statements.
This simple shift in thinking will revolutionize your approach to life forever.
This is the power of possibility thinking, one of the crucial mindsets of “The Jesus Mind.”
Stop saying “I wish” for anything in life. This is not Aladdin. Unless you know a genie somewhere, and if you did thats a demon lol, wishing gets you no where. God didn’t tell us to wish for anything, He asked us to believe for anything. “If you can believe, all things are possible.” (Mark 11:23) By replacing “I wish” with “How can I” statements, you immediately put the power back in your hands to change your situation! In Christ, you CAN do all things. Christ empowers your “can,” not your “wish.” Ask God “How can I” and receive a new perspective to change your life!
Has a Disney movie ever taught you a valuable principe for life? Please share, I’d like to know.
